Tiedo Vellinga MSc obtained his degree in Civil Engineering (coastal engineering ) at the Delft University of Technology in 1979. Since then he has been working for the Port of Rotterdam Authority in the field of infrastructure- and water management. His main present positions and activities are:

  • Professor Ports and Waterways, Hydraulic Engineering Section, Civil Engineering and Geo-Sciences, Delft University of Technology. In this position he is a member of the management team of the Hydraulic Engineering Department.
  • Director Environmental Monitoring Maasvlakte 2. Tiedo Vellinga was in the management team for the realization of the Rotterdam port expansion Maasvlakte 2 responsible for the environmental studies, conditions and permits. Since the start of the realization he is responsible for all the inherent monitoring and evaluation (www.maasvlakte2.com).  
  • Project leader for the development and the implementation of the Environmental Ship Index, a World Ports Climate Initiative (www.environmentalshipindex.org). Before that he prepared the World Ports Climate Declaration from which the ESI resulted as one of the international projects.

 

     

    Specific fields of expertise are:  Port environmental management and sediment management. Tiedo Vellinga wrote numerous publications and is an active participant in international networks related to these fields of expertise.

     

    Academic reputation, research projects and Commissions:

    • Editorship of a special issue of the European Journal of Transport and Infrastructure Research.
    • Chairman of the Programme Committee of the Port Research Centre, a liaison between the TUD and the Port of Rotterdam Authority.
    • Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the “Building with Nature” programme.
    • Member of the Advisory Board of the Research Initiative liaison between Next Generation Infrastructures and Port of Rotterdam Authority.
    • Member of the PIANC Environmental Commission and delegate to Dutch national section of PIANC and Chairman of the international PIANC working group on Green Ports.
